Today there are so many horrible preservatives, toxins and chemicals being add to our food, beauty products, cleaning products and pretty much anything processed. We live very traditionally and in some ways very primitively off-grid in the northern Idaho Wilderness.
Because of our lifestyle as well as our desire to live a healthier lifestyle and the dietary needs of our Autistic son we make everything ourselves. I bake and cook everything from scratch, make our own soaps, candles, cleaning products and today's adventure was a new probiotic homemade deodorant.
What in the world does probiotic mean, right? Well here is a good link that I feel describes it in human terms for all to understand. 🙂 http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_a_probiotic&altQ=What_are_probiotics_drugs
A probiotic is useful in helping the digestive system when taken orally and any form of a probiotic is useful in rebuilding the good bacteria in our body. Yes – there is such a thing as good bacteria and it is important to keep it thriving. Most of today's foods and manufactured items have so many chemicals and preservatives that often times are killing off the good bacteria. Another culprit are antibiotics.
Store bought deodorants have ingredients that are known to cause cancer. Now, I know that we are all going to die sometime, but I would much rather die hanging onto the rack of a 10 x 10 elk that was too big to shoot with my bow, while riding him home 🙂 heheh. Anyway, in addition, the cost of store bought anything in my opinion is ridiculous. And the money I save making my own products is amazing. Most of the things I make myself do not take long to make either. More people need to realize these things.
So below you will find our Trayer Wilderness Probiotic Deodorant made by the Mountain Bunch…. 🙂
Trayer Wilderness Probiotic Deodorant |
- 1 tbsp beeswax
- 1 tbsp coconut oil
- 1 tbsp shea butter
- 1 tbsp cocoa butter
- 2 1/2 tbsp arrowroot powder
- 1 tbsp baking soda
- 2 capsules vitamin E oil
- 2 capsules powdered probiotics (NOW brand works good)
- 20 drops of essentials oils (optional)
- Melt cocoa butters, coconut oil, shea butter and beeswax over low heat. I use a double boiler so the oils don't get too hot. Once everything is melted remove from heat and add the baking soda and arrowroot powder. I use my spatula and cut through the mixture to break up any lumps and to combine. Add the vitamin E oil and essential oils. Allow it to cool a bit and start to thicken. Now open the probiotic capsules and add to the mixture. Quickly combine and pour into either a small round container with a lid if you wish to apply by hand or you can purchase empty deodorant containers online. This recipe makes one tube of deodorant. Now enjoy being healthier.
Note: This recipe is enough for one deodorant.
My men now have a fresh pine scent and mine is a light lavender. I hope you enjoy.
Blessings….
So, I HATE commercial deodorants… There are so many, MANY reasons to avoid putting them on our skin!
Unfortunately, most “natural” deodorants either do not work well, or they have a funky odor.
These are AMAZING! A soft, roll-up variety, these made me, quite literally, just want to stand there, sniffing. Very, very nicely done.
Thanks Jaque… Glad you like… My Mountain Man is liking his refreshing Trayer Wilderness deodorant with the fresh pine scent too… 🙂 I LOVE being able to make EVERYTHING we need here in the wilderness… Quite the rewarding feeling… Blessings… <3
Tammy I love how you make everything you can from scratch! I’m going to try this recipe…mom and I are always having a hard time finding deodorant that is ‘healthy’ for your skin. We miss ya’ll so much and dream of a day when we can see you guys again! 🙂
Love you all,
Hannah
Hello My Dear,
That is fantastic! We really like being able to make everything from scratch. It makes for ALMOST no shopping (YEAH) – I really do not like to shop and it really saves a lot of money. I will be posting our recipe for laundry detergent this week and will have many more to come… Working on the perfect honey mustard recipe as well… 🙂 We miss you guys too and would thoroughly enjoy having you visit…. Blessings and thanks for checking out my site… Love ya’s.. T
I have to pick up a few items to make this but have most of the supplies since I make my own soap. I certainly am going to give this recipe a try.
Jen thanks for stopping by and messaging me…. It has been crazy back here in the wilderness and keeping up with things requires um 48 hours… 🙂 Hope you tried and enjoyed the recipe… I like it a lot – working on different scents right now…. Take care, stop back and God bless you and yours!! <3
Making deodorant is one thing I have yet to try. It’s on my list to do though! I also still plan on making cold processed soap. I keep putting it off. Sometimes I wish I had someone to just hang with me that’s done it before so that I just do it. LOL
It is SO very easy to make, but you have given me an idea… The deodorant would make a GREAT scope topic as would the soap… I am soon in need of making a batch of soap so thank you for the idea. It is a bummer you and I are so far apart because I know we would enjoy a day of creativity together… I will, however, video my process so you can do it along with me… It is a wonderful feeling to be able to make your own products and I know you are familiar with laundry soap, cleaners, etc – you will find these just as easy – just different.. 🙂 Love you sweet friend!!
Yes! Do a scope! That would be great!
Perfect!! I will do that Michelle!! My first live activity…. Should be interesting… 🙂
