Well – we have been having some difficulties with the Idaho State Department of Lands since we arrived. Glen and I made the mistake of going into their office and looking for topographical maps of the area we live in and introducing ourselves.
Well as my girlfriend Carolyn always says…. “You just can't make this stuff up!!!”
This visit ended up causing us a hill of trouble. They immediately wrote us a letter and let us know that we do not have their permission to travel their road to get to our property. Our deed and title for the property we had heavily checked prior to purchasing and heading to Idaho so we were a bit taken by their letter. We went to visit with them and their concern was their road (that is open to the public mind you) they didn't want us to ruin their road – us – the ones who go a good week and a half before entering civilization again…. They wanted us to pay $1000 to cover any road repairs that may be necessary while the whole rest of the county was traveling the road for FREE…. 🙂 NOT!!! We ended the meeting so that we could both research our title and they could research back on their end because our deed clearly stated that we have easements and legal right of ways thru all roads that lead to our property and this is the only road that gets us there…
So we got an email on the 23rd of July stating that they did their research and we don't have access so they are gating the road and prohibiting us the access necessary to get to our property. Well we got the county commissioner involved and got on the horn with the title company (which was to be researching this since the last meeting) only to find out that they could not find anything to back up the verbage on our deed. Bad thing – we really do not have access to our house – good thing – they are liable to pay for that because we had their work insured. WWHHHEEEEE…….
So the state paid us a visit today only to tell us that they will be gating our road and it will be locked as of December 1st and we are just out of luck. We expressed that the title company is responsible and we need time to get this resolved, but no luck… December 1st is all they are giving us and then we can travel the 2 miles back the road to our house either in snow shoes, snowmobile or 4 wheeler….
We were not happy campers let me tell you…. Not to mention there are 13 other properties out here and they have singled us out and are not contacting any of the other land owners – they told us we need to do this and create a road association…. I laughed – a road association in the middle of no where…. There is no power back here, no phone and we need a road association…. They also want to give us access to the north of our property which is completely impassible so the struggle begins….
